Qaboos bin Said: A Hard Act to Follow (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

With the death of the Omani sultan, The Media Line takes a look back, but also forward

Sultan Haitham bin Tariq is the new new ruler of Oman following the death from an undisclosed ailment on Friday of the previous sultan, his cousin, Qaboos bin Said.

Qaboos, who was 79, was able to remain in the good graces of both Iran and the United States. He was often called upon to help facilitate an end to regional disputes.

In his first speech as the new sultan, Haitham, 66, said he would follow in Qaboos’s footsteps, pursuing a foreign policy of “peaceful coexistence among nations and people, and good neighborly behavior of non-interference in the affairs of others.”

To learn more about the new sultan, the Media Line spoke with Elana DeLozier, a research fellow at at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, where she specializes in the Gulf region.
