Anger Sweeps India over Amendment to Citizenship Law (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Some fear massive incoming migration while others note just which people the amendment leaves out

Large and violent protests are sweeping cities in northern India. The unrest follows an amendment made to the nation’s Citizenship Law that reduces the time that certain migrants who arrived from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh must wait before obtaining citizenship.

Some residents of the densely populated country claim that the amendment will encourage incoming migration. Others note that it covers Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and Zoroastrians – but not Muslims.

The idea, according to the Indian government, is that repatriating non-Muslim migrants to majority-Muslim nations could place them in danger. But many see this as just the beginning of further legislation aimed at curtailing the rights of the approximately 200 million Muslims who live in the South Asian country.

To hear more, The Media Line spoke with Dr. Gareth Price, an India expert with London’s Chatham House think tank.
