Making Sense of the Latest Nuclear Enrichment Declaration Out of Iran (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Robert Kelley, former chief inspector in Iraq for the International Atomic Energy Agency, says it’s mostly politics and that ‘from a technical point of view,’ current Iranian enrichment ‘doesn’t make much difference’

Tehran recently announced that it had abandoned all limitations on its uranium enrichment program to protest crippling US economic sanctions. Those sanctions were imposed when the Trump Administration, in 2018, led Washington out of a 2015 multilateral accord aimed at blocking the Islamic Republic’s suspected drive to produce nuclear weapons.

On Thursday morning, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the country was now enriching more uranium than it was before signing the deal.

Clearly, it’s a lot of politics. But what are the technical ramifications?

To learn more, The Media Line spoke with Robert Kelley, an expert who twice served as chief nuclear inspector in Iraq for the International Atomic Energy Agency. He is now a research fellow for the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
