PA President Abbas in Egypt in Bid to Torpedo Trump Peace Plan (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is in Cairo Sunday to hold consultations with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi geared toward shoring up support ahead of the prospective release of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.

Abbas, who has repeatedly rejected the yet-unveiled proposal out of hand, will also attend a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers, whom he will likewise implore to oppose the so-called “deal of the century” and help the PA alleviate its financial crisis.

Abbas’s trip comes against the backdrop of last week’s assertion by lead American negotiator Jason Greenblatt that the term “two-state solution” was no longer necessary, given that all parties construe its meaning differently.

This has raised further speculation that the White House initiative will not call for the immediate establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The Media Line discussed Abbas’ trip with Dr. Ghassan Khatib, former Palestinian Authority Minister of Labor and Planning.
