The Aftermath: A Short Analysis of the Israeli Election (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

It was a dirty campaign that tended to avoid the issues, focusing instead on personalities, mostly through questionable claims and outright lies. The two largest parties may have come out neck and neck, but the odds-makers will put their money on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu forming the next government, basically because he’d have an easier time doing so than political newcomer Benny Gantz.

Still, as political watchers have noted, the outcome basically reflects the views of the country’s highly divided electorate, so while Gantz may have run an effective campaign for a novice, Netanyahu ran a campaign that resonated more with the people.

Einat Wilf, a noted Israeli academic, author and lecturer – and a former centrist politician herself – spoke with The Media Line about the nuts and bolts of the campaign. No fan of Netanyahu, what she has to say about him and some of his policies might surprise you.
