The Riddle of Sudan (AUDIO INTERVIEW)

Might this week’s military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters indicate a deepening rift among the country’s top generals?

Sudanese security forces in the capital city of Khartoum have killed as many as dozens of people at an encampment of protesters seeking democratic rule following the ouster of longtime strongman Omar al-Bashir in April.

The protesters had once seen security forces as their allies against Bashir. But things have now devolved into differences over what comes next, particularly the transition period. Who will oversee it? How long will it last? What will it lead to?

The Media Line spoke with Dr. Annette Weber, a senior fellow and Sudan expert at the German institute for International and Security Affairs, and she says that much, if not most, of the uncertainties are due to opposing forces within the military.
