The African Union has purchased 270 million coronavirus vaccine doses for the continent, it reported. The vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneka-Oxford University will come from the Serum Institute in India and Johnson & Johnson. African Union Chairman and President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa reported that the first 50 million doses are scheduled to arrive in the second quarter of 2021 with the remainder before the end of the year. The continent is also expected to receive some 600 million doses via COVAX, the initiative to bring vaccines to low- and medium-income countries.
