Japan adds more emergency regulations in virus surge

More than one-half of Japan’s population will be under a coronavirus state of emergency beginning Thursday as the national government added seven more prefectures to its list of areas under states of emergency. A surge of infections and deaths have almost doubled in the last month to over 298,000 and more than 3,900, respectively. Tokyo and three nearby areas were recently placed under these emergency regulations, which are scheduled to last until February 7.
