Hindu pilgrims descended upon the banks of the Ganges River in northern India, despite the coronavirus pandemic, for the seven-week Kumbh Mela festival. One of the world’s largest religious gatherings, the festival regularly attracts millions who wade into the river as a religious rite. More than 150,000 Indian citizens have already died from COVID-19 and health authorities fear the festival may speed another wave of infections.
