1 Killed in Renewed Anti-Coup Protests in Sudan
One person has been killed by security forces during renewed protests against the October military coup led by Sudanese General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan that halted the country’s transition to civilian rule. The protester, who was not identified, died as a result of “a bullet to the chest” in Omdurman, near the capital Khartoum, the pro-democracy Central Committee of Sudan Doctors said in a statement reported by the French news service, AFP.
The protests on Saturday came after demonstrations on Thursday against the coup led to the injuries of about 100 people, as well as the arrest of two leading anti-coup figures from Sudan’s Communist Party.
Military forces have killed nearly 100 people and injured thousands during attempts to quell protests that have taken place since the coup.
Following the coup, Burhan agreed to reinstate deposed prime minister Abdallah Hamdok, who was placed under house arrest at the start of the coup, and allowed him to form a new technocratic cabinet under the supervision of the military ahead of elections to be held by the end of 2023. Hamdok resigned in January. Pro-democracy protesters want a civilian government to hold power until the elections.
