2 Israel Police Officers Stabbed in Jerusalem, Assailant Killed
Two Israel Police officers were injured in a stabbing attack and their assailant killed in the Old City of Jerusalem. The assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed the officers at the Bab al-Huta Gate in east Jerusalem at about 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. One of the officers reportedly also was shot in the leg by friendly fire. The assailant was identified as Samer Jamal al-Qawasmi from the east Jerusalem neighborhood of at-Tur. He was declared dead at the site of the attack.
“This is another reminder of the threats faced by the police in Jerusalem. The police’s quick response brought an end to the incident,” Israel Police District Commander Doron Turgeman said in a tweet.
Public Security Minister Omer Barlev tweeted that: “In the coming weeks, and until after Ramadan, terrorists and radical groups will try to ignite this area. The police and the Border Police will be alert and ready.”
