7 countries impose sanctions over Iran-linked terror

The US and six Middle Eastern countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – have imposed sanctions on 25 corporations, banks and individuals linked to Tehran and its support for terrorist groups. These groups include the Basij Resistance Force, a branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Hizbullah, the Lebanon-based Shia Islamist organization. The seven nations that imposed the sanctions comprise the Terrorist Financing Targeting Center (TFTC). The move was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the US Treasury Department, coinciding with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s visit to the region to lay the groundwork for an economic development plan intended to assist the Palestinians, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon. The sanctions are in addition to earlier sanctions that the US reimposed on Iran when US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
