915 Aid Trucks Delivered to Gaza, but Challenges Stall Distribution

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 915 aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip on Monday, marking the second day of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of war. The deliveries, coordinated with the US, Qatar, and Egypt, are part of the ceasefire agreement requiring 600 truckloads of aid daily, including 50 carrying fuel. Half of these deliveries are designated for Gaza’s northern region, where experts warn of an impending famine.

UN data shows 2,892 aid trucks entered Gaza in December. However, looting and security concerns have slowed distribution. Only 72 trucks’ worth of supplies were delivered daily in December, dropping to 51 daily between January 1-5.

The humanitarian situation remains dire, with much of Gaza in ruins and its 2.3 million residents repeatedly displaced. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described conditions as “catastrophic,” citing significant obstacles to aid delivery, including visa and permit delays, and called for urgent international cooperation to restore order and prevent further looting of supplies.

Guterres emphasized the need for safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian operations and urged nations to assist with medical evacuations, commercial supply entry, and the removal of unexploded ordnance. He also stressed that both Israel and Hamas must coordinate with the UN to ensure effective aid distribution.
