Abbas: We Will Go to Elections after All Factions Have Agreed

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in a speech at the Muqataa [presidential compound] in Ramallah on Monday during the opening of the first international conference of the Anti-Corruption Commission: “We will go to elections after all the factions have agreed to it.” Abbas said that the most important issue Palestinians now face is the legislative and presidential elections that he announced at the United Nations. He confirmed that the work of the election committee headed by Hanna Nasser and coordination between all Palestinian factions have begun. “Yesterday, we were informed that all the organizations [factions] approved the elections, and this is a good step, and there was only one small but big issue – that of Jerusalem. In 1996 and 2006, we conducted elections for the people of Jerusalem and we will not accept that the people of Jerusalem vote in a place other than Jerusalem.” He added, “We are now waiting to continue our efforts and ask Europe and others to make efforts with Israel to accept the holding of elections as they were in 1996, 2005 and 2006.”
