Bahrain News Agency revealed that Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad has informed the secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Abdul Latif Al Zayani, of King Hamad bin Essa’s desire to appoint Al Zayani as Bahrain’s next foreign minister. The appointment will take effect at the close of Al Zayani’s term in the Secretariat of the Cooperation Council, in April 2020. He will be succeeded by former Kuwaiti Finance Minister Nayef Al Hajraf, whose appointment was approved in December 2019 at the GCC summit in Riyadh. Bahrain News Agency added that it was decided to appoint the current foreign minister, Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa, as adviser to the king on diplomatic affairs.
