Alleged Spy Working for Israel Given 10-year Sentence in Iran

A man identified by an Iranian judicial spokesman as Gholamhossein Esmaili has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of spying on behalf of Israel, according to Iranian state television. The spokesman noted an additional charged of “acquiring illegitimate wealth.” Esmaili has dual Iran-UK citizenship. The Foreign Office in London said it “continues to request consular access.” Iranian leaders have claimed an uptick in foreign intelligence activities aimed at the Islamic Republic, which currently is at odds with Britain over the seizure of a British-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. There is also tension with the United States over alleged Iranian attacks against US allies in the region, and due to severe American sanctions reinstated after Washington withdrew from a multilateral accord aimed at ending Tehran’s nuclear drive. Iran has even arrested domestic environmentalists who have been using sophisticated cameras to photograph endangered cheetahs in the Iranian highlands. Four of the environmentalists are reportedly facing execution.
