The Arab sector in Israel went on a general strike on Tuesday. The strike was called by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, in protest against “attacks on Palestinians in Jerusalem, Sheikh Jarrah and the al-Aqsa Mosque” as well as “attacks on the Arab public in general and mixed cities in particular.” The strike was set to include all businesses and industries except for private education.
Also on Tuesday, Hamas and Fatah each called for a ‘Day of Rage’ in the West Bank and the Golan Heights, including rallies and protests across the West Bank, in particular in places where Palestinians have clashed with Israeli soldiers. Fatah called for confrontations with Israeli security forces, Ynet reported.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning the Israeli government approved an extension of the state of emergency in the mixed Jewish-Arab city of Lod for an additional 48 hours, including a curfew and restrictions on the free movement of city residents. Lod has been a focal point of rioting and infighting between its Arab and Jewish residents which has left two people dead, dozens injured, and homes, vehicles, businesses and synagogues and other Jewish institutions torched.
