At Least 3 Dead as Sudanese Military Forcefully Clears Khartoum Sit-In

At least three people – and perhaps many more – have been killed, and many more wounded, amid heavy gunfire at a sit-in site in front of the military headquarters in Khartoum, with activists at the scene alleging it is an attempt by the military to disperse the protesters. Live footage from Arab television has shown tents aflame and demonstrators running from the chaos. On Saturday, roughly a dozen people were injured by gunfire near the site of the sit-in. Tensions are rising between the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and an alliance of protest groups demanding that power be handed over to civilians since the overthrow of president Omar Al-Bashir on April 11. The two sides reached a compromise when they agreed on a three-year transitional period and the composition of a legislature, although the talks collapsed before final approval could be reached on a sovereign governing council. The military rulers have insisted on maintaining authority throughout the transition.
