At Least Two Dead in Fire at Crowded Migrant Camp on Greek Island

People rioted on Sunday in the wake of a fire earlier in the day at a camp for some 12,000 Middle Eastern migrants on the Greek island of Lesbos. The fire killed at least two people and reportedly broke out in a container at the camp, where overcrowding and poor conditions have often led to unrest among the residents. Like Turkey, Greece has borne a sizeable brunt of the movement of people fleeing an eight-year civil war in Syria, as well as fighting elsewhere in the region. Refugee traffic reached a peak in 2016, but Greek officials say that some 9,000 more arrived in August, and at least 8,000 showed up in September. Many of the migrants reaching Greece have come through Turkey, with Lesbos being close to the maritime border.
