Biden, Ergodan to Meet on Sidelines of NATO Summit

US President Joe Biden and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will have a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Brussels next week, Jake Sullivan, US national security advisor, said during a White House briefing on Monday. The meeting between the two leaders has a “broad and expansive” agenda, Sullivan told reporters, made up of regional issues, such as “in the Eastern Mediterranean with Syria, with Iran, Nagorno-Karabakh — but also the role that Turkey will play on a going-forward basis with respect to negotiations and diplomacy in Afghanistan and how the U.S and Turkey itself deal with some of our significant differences on values and human rights and other issues.”

Sullivan added that both men are “looking forward to the opportunity to really have a business-like opportunity to review the full breadth of their relationship.”

The meeting is scheduled to take place on June 14. Relations between the US and Turkey have been strained in recent years, in part over Turkey’s human rights record and over Turkey’s purchase of the Soviet S-300 missile defense system.
