Blinken Denies US Involvement in Haniyeh Assassination, Stresses Cease-fire Need

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken clarified on Wednesday that the United States had no involvement in the recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Speaking during an interview with Channel News Asia in Singapore, Blinken emphasized the US government’s lack of awareness and involvement in the incident that led to the death of the Palestinian group’s leader.

Haniyeh, typically based in Qatar and recognized as a prominent figure in Hamas’s international diplomacy, was confirmed dead by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards shortly after attending a swearing-in ceremony for Iran’s new president. This event has stoked concerns about the potential setback to ceasefire efforts in the ongoing Gaza conflict, which erupted following a Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7.

Blinken, who has been on a diplomatic tour in Asia since last week, reiterated the importance of pushing forward with cease-fire negotiations and securing the release of hostages currently held in Gaza. “It’s vitally important to hopefully put things on a better path for more enduring peace and security,” Blinken stated, underscoring the US commitment to facilitating a resolution to the conflict.
