Canada Flags Egypt, UAE, Bahrain, Italy, Thailand in Expanded High-Risk Travel Advisory

Canada expanded its list of high-risk travel destinations on Friday, issuing a top-tier advisory that now covers Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Italy, Bahrain, the UAE, and several additional countries. The notice cites a mix of terrorism threats, political unrest, and growing obstacles to movement that have created unpredictable security conditions in multiple regions.

The advisory highlights Egypt as one of the most challenging environments for travelers, pointing to persistent attacks in the Sinai Peninsula, military activity in remote border zones, and instability in areas popular with tourists. Canadian officials warn that northern Sinai is off-limits, the western desert presents dangers tied to armed groups and landmines, and even the quieter parts of South Sinai require caution. Security forces and civilians have both been targeted in past incidents, and the risk is considered higher around holidays and national commemorations.

Saudi Arabia is also included due to what Canadian authorities describe as a sustained terror threat and heightened tensions linked to regional conflicts. Areas along the Yemen border face the potential for cross-border strikes, while unrest in the Eastern Province remains a concern. Travelers are advised to monitor official updates and avoid movement near conflict zones.

Thailand appears on the list primarily because of violence in the southern provinces, where insurgent activity continues to affect government sites and civilian areas. While Bangkok and northern tourist centers often operate normally, authorities say large gatherings can shift quickly and should be approached with care.

Italy’s inclusion stems from concerns related to Europe-wide terror threats and a rise in petty crime in popular tourist hubs. Major transport centers and landmark districts are described as possible targets. Visitors are urged to take precautions with valuables and remain alert in crowded areas.

Bahrain and the UAE are both flagged for risks tied to regional instability. Bahrain continues to experience politically driven demonstrations that can turn violent without warning. In the UAE, authorities cite the possibility of attacks aimed at government sites or places connected to Western or Israeli visitors.

Canada’s advisory stresses the need for travelers to stay current on local conditions, follow official guidance, and prepare for rapid changes in security measures, particularly in regions already affected by conflict or terrorism.
