Charity Worker Jailed in Iran Transferred to Psychiatric Ward

British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has been transferred from Evin prison to the psychiatric ward at Imam Khomeini hospital in Tehran, the Free Nazanin Campaign, a group advocating for her freedom, said on Wednesday. The group added that Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s father had visited the hospital on Tuesday and confirmed she was being held there under the control of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It remains unclear what treatment she is receiving and how long she will be held in the hospital. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was sentenced to five years in jail on grounds of espionage following her arrest in April 2016 at a Tehran airport as she was heading back to Britain with her daughter after a family visit. Her family and the foundation have denied the charge. Last month, Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her husband concurrently ended a two-week hunger strike aimed at pressuring authorities, both British and Iranian, to push for her release. At the onset of her hunger strike, UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt tweeted to the Islamic Republic: “Do the right thing, show the world your humanity and let this innocent woman home.”
