Clashes Erupt in Sudan Over Deal on Transitional Power Structure

Hostilities erupted in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum late Monday, killing a military police officer and injuring numerous protesters, three of whom died on Tuesday. The violence erupted after the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the protest movement announced they had agreed on the duties and authorities of the executive and legislative bodies for a transitional period following the ouster of president Omar al-Bashir. The council accused armed groups dissatisfied with political progress of opening fire at protest sites, whereas demonstrators claimed people linked to the former regime were inciting violence. The TMC and the opposition were due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the military-civilian balance of power in the transitional bodies, and the length of the transition before elections. Protesters are pushing for a civilian-led change and have been camped outside the army headquarters since early April following the overthrow of Bashir, who has since been charged with money laundering and financing terror, and is being held at a prison in Khartoum.
