Container Ship Stuck in Suez Canal ‘Partially Refloated’

The Ever Given container ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal nearly a week ago, halting maritime traffic in both directions, was partially refloated and redirected in the canal, leading to hope that it will be able to move out of the way later on Monday with the coming of high tide. If the ship is still unable to move with the assistance of tug boats, then some of its cargo will have to be removed, leading to further delays.

About 400 vessels have been prevented from traveling in the canal, leading to a loss in revenue for Egypt of up to $15 million a day. The 200,000-ton Ever Given is classified as an ultra large container ship. It is carrying hundreds of containers bound for Rotterdam from China.

As the ship appeared to move in the canal, video clips show cheering as workers can be heard praising Allah saying in Arabic Alhamdulillah (Thank God), and Allah Akbar (God is Great).
