Coup Protesters Arrested in Sudan Begin Hunger Strike

Over 100 Sudanese detainees, most being held without charge, began a hunger strike on Tuesday. The hunger strikers include high-profile politicians arrested for alleged corruption over their work on a task force to rebuild the country after the overthrow of President Omar Bashir in 2019, Al Jazeera reported. They are part of the protest movement against the October military coup that has slowed progress to democratic civilian rule.

At least 80 people have been killed by security forces during protests since the coup, according to reports. At least two protesters were killed during protests on Monday in the capital and in other Sudanese cities. One of the protesters was killed in Khartoum and the other in Omdurman, both hit by live fire from Sudanese security forces attempting to quell the riots.

Following the coup, Sudanese General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan agreed to reinstate deposed prime minister Abdallah Hamdok, who was placed under house arrest at the start of the coup, and allowed him to form a new technocratic cabinet under the supervision of the military ahead of elections to be held by the end of 2023. Hamdok resigned last month. Pro-democracy protesters want a civilian government to hold power until the elections.
