Displaced Syrians, Refugees Suffer Under Winter Onslaught

At least three Syrians displaced by their country’s ongoing civil war have died from exposure in Iraq in recent days as temperatures have plunged below zero and snow has blanked areas of the Middle East. Two of the dead are children and one was a 71-year-old woman, according to the Iraqi human rights monitor, Afada Observatory, The New Arab reported. Meanwhile, at least one child died and his mother was in intensive care after their tent in a northern Syrian refugee camp collapse under the weight of snow in a January 18 storm, Reuters reported, citing the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Refugee camps in Syria have flooded in recent days, and at least 200 tents collapsed under heavy snow and rain, leaving refugees with no shelter in the brutal conditions. “There are no words to express the suffering of the people and children here,” Fared Al Mahlool, a photographer based in northwest Syria, told The New Arab.

In December, rainstorms damaged tents housing more than 1,200 people in northwest Syria, according to the report.

Over 6 million Syrian civilians have been internally displaced by the war, while another 5 million are refugees in other countries.
