Libya Drone Strike Kills Dozens of Civilians

A drone strike launched by the Libyan National Army (LNA) on the southern town of Murzuq killed at least 43 civilians and wounded 51 others, Reuters reported Monday, citing local official Mohamed Omar. The Khalifa Haftar-led LNA denied that it had intentionally targeted civilians and contended that the strike was aimed against “Chadian opposition fighters,” a likely reference to opposition Tebu tribesmen in the area. Since the 2011 overthrow of Moammar Gaddafi, control over Libya has been split between the rival Tripoli-based Government of National Accord – headed by Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and supported by Qatar and Turkey – and the Benghazi-based LNA, which is backed by Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Russia. Haftar’s troops have been engaged in a four-months-long military campaign to conquer the capital. In July, the United Nations said the ongoing battle had killed more than 1,000 people.
