Hosni Mubarak, the ex-president of Egypt, was given a funeral in Cairo with full military honors on Wednesday, a day after he died at the age of 91. The funeral, which featured a flag-draped coffin, horse-drawn carriage and cannon salute owing to his career as a fighter pilot and commander of the air force, took place at a military mosque in the city. President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, as well as government and army figures, participated in a funeral procession alongside Mubarak’s wife, Suzanne, and their two sons, Alaa and Gamal. Mubarak came to power following the 1981 assassination of president Anwar al-Sadat and retained an iron grip over the country for three decades until being forced from office during the 2011 Arab Spring. His health began to fail during a series of trials on charges of murder and corruption that often saw him bedridden in the defendant’s cage, but he was found not guilty or had his convictions overturned. He lived out his final years in the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis, where his casket was placed in a family tomb.
