The United Arab Emirates said Monday it shot down a ballistic missile fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. It was the third Houthi attack on the UAE, a key member of the Saudi-led Arab coalition backing the Yemeni army, in less than two weeks, and follows a series of territorial defeats for the Iran-backed rebels. Yemen’s Houthi militia on Sunday midnight claimed responsibility for the cross-border missile attack, which occurred while Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited the Emirates. “The armed forces will announce details of a large-scale military operation deep inside the UAE within hours,” Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported. There were no casualties in the attack, according to the UAE’s Defense Ministry. “Air defense forces … intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi terrorist group at the UAE,” the ministry said, according to the official WAM news agency, adding that fragments of debris fell “outside of populated areas.” The ministry said that in response, Emirati forces destroyed the missile launch site, in Yemen’s northern Al-Jawf region.
