Five Dead in Algeria Bombing

In one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, a homemade bomb killed five people killed and injured three others in eastern Algeria on Thursday, according to the defense ministry.

The victims were riding in a car when the explosion took place in the Tebessa Province, some 573 km (358 miles) from the capital, Algiers.

“Five citizens died and three others were wounded when a homemade bomb exploded as their car drove in Oueid Khenig-Roum, near the district of Telidjane in Tebessa prefecture,” it said.

The ministry didn’t elaborate further.

Violence is rarer in the North African country since the end of a war in the 1990s between the government and Islamists that saw 200,000 deaths. But Al-Qa’ida in the Islamic Maghreb and small bands of Islamists allied with the Islamic State have been active in remote areas.
