Former Turkish prime minister Ahmet Davutoğlu announced at a news conference Friday in Ankara the establishment of a new party to overhaul the country’s political system and challenge the rule of his former boss, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “Those ruling Turkey have no agenda other than staying in power,” Davutoğlu said as he debuted his Future Party. Davutoğlu sharply criticized the concentration of power around Erdoğan, who has ruled Turkey since 2003, first as prime minister and then as president. He is vowing to fight corruption, guarantee a separation of powers, respect an independent judiciary and “defend a democratic parliamentary system.” He is also calling for a new constitution. The former PM resigned from Erdoğan’s Islamist Justice and Development Party in September, two months after former deputy prime minister Ali Babacan did so. Babacan is also expected to announce the formation of a rival political party. Davutoğlu served as prime minister from 2014 to 2016, before Erdoğan replaced him with another loyalist.
