Honduras Opening ‘Diplomatic Office’ in Jerusalem

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez will be on hand to open what an official government statement called a “diplomatic office” in Jerusalem. The facility, according to the statement, is to be an “annex” of the country’s embassy, which is located in Rishon Lezion, a suburb of Tel Aviv. Hernandez had previously spoken of opening a trade office in Jerusalem. The new facility will be inaugurated on September 1. On Tuesday, Sara Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, was shown in a live Facebook feed telling supporters of her husband’s Likud party that she had been behind the move, having initiated things during a visit to Guatemala, Honduras’s neighbor. “I asked the president to assist us in moving the Honduras embassy to Jerusalem,” Netanyahu told the cheering crowd. “Right away, he called his friend… Hernández and told him he was sitting with me at lunch and I had proposed that he move the embassy to Jerusalem.” Two days after the United States moved its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem in May 2018, Guatemala followed suit, bucking a worldwide trend for countries to maintain embassies outside the contested city.
