Iran and EU Signal Willingness To Resume Political Dialogue on Security and Nuclear Issues

Iran and the European Union on Monday expressed interest in reviving political dialogue focused on nuclear negotiations and mutual security concerns, according to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry. The announcement followed a phone conversation between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

During the call, Araghchi said Iran remains committed to resolving disputes through diplomacy and criticized what he called “fabricated concerns” over its nuclear program. He asserted that a deal addressing Western fears about Iran acquiring nuclear weapons is possible, but only if the other side avoids “unreal and illogical” demands.

He also reiterated Iran’s openness to continue discussions with the E3—Germany, France, and the UK—either within the EU framework or independently. The foreign minister said Tehran is ready to hold broader political talks with the EU on shared security issues.

Kallas welcomed further engagement with Iran and said she hopes both sides’ deputies can lay the groundwork for formal negotiations.

Talks between Iran and the E3 began on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September and have continued through four additional rounds, most recently in Geneva in late March. These talks have focused on Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of international sanctions.

The EU has played a key intermediary role in nuclear discussions between Iran and the United States, which remain stalled amid broader regional tensions.
