During a televised meeting on Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described April 11 as the target date for resuming “low risk” economic activities that had been curtailed due to the pandemic, and April 18 for resuming them in the capital Tehran. “Two-thirds of all Iranian government employees will work out of the office from Saturday,” he said. “The decision does not contradict stay-at-home advice by the health authorities.” Rouhani did not elaborate on what he meant by “low-risk,” but has referred to classes at schools and universities, as well as religious and sporting events – all of which will remain canceled, at least until April 18 – as “high-risk” activities. On Sunday, Iranian health authorities were reporting 151 deaths during the latest 24-hour period, bringing the country’s total COVID-19 death toll to 3,603, and the total cases officially diagnosed during the pandemic to 58,226, by far the highest figures for the Middle East. An intercity travel ban will remain in effect until a week from Saturday.
