Iran Fires 12 Ballistic Missiles at US Consulate in Iraqi Kurdistan

“Twelve long-range ballistic missiles were fired from the east outside the Iraqi borders toward the new building of the US consulate in Irbil and surrounding residential areas, as well as near the building of Kurdistan 24 TV Channel,” the Interior Ministry in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region said in a statement on Sunday. One civilian was wounded and several buildings were damaged in the attack, which occurred around 1 am Sunday morning local time. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but “the missiles were fired outside the borders of Iraq and Kurdistan, [coming] more precisely from the east,” a press release from the Kurdistan counterterrorism unit stated, hinting that Iran was responsible. US officials said unambiguously that the attack came from Iran. The Iraqi Joint Operations Command confirmed the Irbil attacks and said in a statement that “their perpetrators will receive their just punishment.” The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, citing local reports, claimed without evidence that the attack targeted “secret Israeli bases.” Iranian TV reported that the missiles were targeting two headquarters of the Israeli Mossad, in response to the killing of two Islamic Revolutionary Guards officers in an attack on Damascus attributed to Israel.
