Iran’s FM: ‘Good Agreement’ to Revive 2015 Nuclear Deal Within Reach

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Monday that a “good agreement” was within reach if the US, France, Britain and Germany show seriousness in fully honoring their commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal that Iran negotiated with leading world powers in 2015. Former US President Donald Trump pulled Washington out of the deal in 2018, claiming that Iran had violated its terms, and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, prompting the Islamic Republic to walk away from its commitments, particularly on the quantity and quality of enriched uranium it would stockpile. In remarks to the press after meeting his Irish counterpart, Simon Coveney, in Tehran, Amir-Abdollahian told reports, “We are ready to reach a good agreement and do not welcome the Western side’s shock-based approach.” He added that “the Western sides are required to prove their real intention for returning to their entire commitments under the JCPOA.” Meanwhile, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said in his meeting with Coveney later in the day that Iran sought the removal of sanctions and respect for the rights of Iran’s people. Since April 2021, eight rounds of talks have been held in the Austrian capital between Iran and the remaining JCPOA parties – Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany – with indirect talks also involving the United States, to revive and pull the US back into the landmark deal.
