Islamic State says it was behind a Friday evening minibus attack that killed at least 12 people and wounded five others near the Iraqi city of Karbala, south of Baghdad. Police said a bomb that had been planted in the minibus exploded as the vehicle was traveling between the northern outskirts of the city and an army checkpoint. An eyewitness reportedly told police that a passenger had disembarked, leaving behind a large package. Although ISIS lost its strongholds in both Iraq and Syria following major military offensives often carried out by different armies and militias working in tandem, it continues to call on sympathizers and what are believed to be sleeper cells to mount attacks against both soldiers and civilians. It is also believed to be particularly active in North Africa.
