Islamic State Fires Rockets on Iraqi Oil Refinery

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a rocket strike on an oil refinery in northern Iraq. The attack on Sunday shut down the operations of the state-run Northern Refineries Co. located in Siniya, in Salahuddin province, which produces about 30,000 barrels of oil per day. The two Katyusha rockets that the Islamic State said it fired on the refinery caused a fire in a fuel storage tank and spread to a network of pipelines, Reuters reported, citing unnamed refinery officials. It was shut down to prevent more damage. The Islamic State, or ISIS, was declared vanquished from Iraqi territory during a US-backed military campaign in 2017, though it retains sleeper cells in the country.
