Israel Building Underground Defense System along Lebanon Border

Israel announced on Sunday that it has begun constructing a network of underground sensors Sunday along its northern border. Military spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said the sensors would be placed along the border with Lebanon to detect seismic activity and underground noise that indicates tunnel-building activity in the area. In recent years, Israel has destroyed a number of cross-border “attack tunnels” that were excavated by the Iranian-supported armed group, Hizbullah. The new defense system would start at Misgav Am and would all be on the Israeli side of the border. UN peacekeepers in the region have been apprised of Israel’s plans, according to Conricus. “We understand that our activity may be seen and will be heard on the other side and we want to explain what we are doing and why we are doing it. It is a matter of precaution,” Conricus said.
