Israel Strikes Hamas Weapons Sites Following Gaza Border Riots

The Israeli Air Force struck four Hamas weapons storage and manufacturing sites in the Gaza Strip overnight between Saturday and Sunday, the Israeli military said. There were no reports of casualties in the airstrikes. This follows a Hamas-organized demonstration on Gaza’s border with Israel on Saturday during which an Israeli border policeman was seriously injured and 41 Palestinians were wounded, two of them critically. The wounded border policeman was identified as Barel Shmueli, 21, a sniper who was shot in the head at point-blank range through a hole in the concrete border barrier. One of the critically injured Palestinians was a 13-year-old boy. The demonstration, in which hundreds of Palestinians protested against the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the coastal strip, spiraled into cross-border violence when dozens of Palestinians threw rocks and explosives at Israeli forces, who responded with riot dispersal methods, such as tear gas, as well as live gunfire.
