Israel Unveils Portable Iron Dome Missile Defense System

The Israeli aerospace company Rafael has unveiled a portable Iron Dome missile defense battery, giving deployed troops the same protection the original system has provided for civilian populations. The I-Dome is designed to protect soldiers from rockets, mortars and UAV attacks. The new portable defense system fits on the back of a large flatbed truck, making it easily transportable, and can hold 10 Tamir interceptor missiles (rather than the 20 used by its heavier cousin). “We put a missile launcher, radar and a control system in the cab of a vehicle…. This array can offer the same protection as the Iron Dome battery,” Rafael CEO Pini Yungman told Israel’s Channel 13 news. Iron Dome has been used in Israel since 2011 to protect civilians from rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, such as the large-scale strikes from the coastal enclave during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014. The U.S. Army is set to purchase two standard Iron Dome batteries and has expressed interest in buying the new portable I-Dome batteries as well, according to Channel 13.
