Israeli Distributor of Ben & Jerry’s Sues Parent Company Over Boycott

The Israeli manufacturer and distributor of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream in Israel has sued its parent company, Unilever for ending their business relationship.

“Ben & Jerry’s Israel has filed a lawsuit in the US Federal Court against Unilever Global following their illegal demand that the ice creams produced in the Israeli plant not be sold in parts of Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria,” the distributor tweeted on Thursday, using the biblical term for the West Bank.

Ben & Jerry’s said it would not renew the Israeli licensee’s agreement at the end of 2022 when its current contract is over after the Israeli licensee refused a directive to stop selling the products in West Bank Jewish settlements.

The lawsuit filed in US District Court of New Jersey asks the court to call Unilever’s move illegal and enable the Israeli company, American Quality Products, to continue to sell Ben & Jerry’s products throughout Israel and the West Bank. It also seeks a jury trial and damages.

“The boycott of Israel has a heavy price and it is Unilever’s time to recalculate the route and allow Ben & Jerry’s Israel to continue selling ice cream in all parts of Israel,” Avi Singer, CEO and owner of Ben & Jerry’s Israel said in a statement.

The Israeli distributor also works with Palestinian suppliers and distributors.

The board of Ben & Jerry’s is permitted to make business decisions independent of Unilever. Unilever has said it will put a plan in place to continue to sell the ice cream in Israel inside the pre-1967 borders.
