Looking ahead to Israel’s 71st Independence Day, which begins Wednesday evening, data released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics shows Israel’s population has crossed the 9-million mark, at 9,021,000. The data show that 6,697,000 Israelis are Jewish (74.2 percent), 1,890,000 are Arab (20.9%), and the remaining 434,000 (4.9%) are members of other ethnic groups. Some 166,000 foreign nationals are currently residing in the country and are not included in the population statistics. Since last Independence Day, the population of Israel has grown by 177,000 (an increase of 2%). According to the data, the country’s population is expected to reach 15.2 million by the Jewish state’s 100th Independence Day in 2048. Independence Day directly follows the country’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and terror victims.
