Jordanians Await Local Election Results

Voters in the Hashemite Kingdom await the results of governorate and municipal council elections that were held yesterday at 1,850 polling stations across the country. The votes should be tallied, and results are expected to be announced today. The turnout was 29.6%, with more than 1.36 million votes cast, according to the Independent Election Commission (IEC). A total of 4,646 candidates competed for 1,135 positions. Among the candidates, around 18% – 846 people – were women. Voters were required to show proof of vaccination and precautions were taken to ensure social distancing at the polling stations, according to a statement by the IEC. Despite reports of violence and the suspension of voting in some areas, the kingdom’s Public Security Directorate said the polling day went off smoothly.
