Kurdish-led Forces Retake Syrian Prison From Islamic State Inmates

Kurdish-led forces in northeastern Syria say that they have retaken a Kurdish-run prison in Hasakeh, Syria, six days after an attack and attempted break out of thousands of Islamic State prisoners held in the Ghuwayran prison.  Some 2,000 ISIS inmates surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces on Wednesday. The attack last Thursday night by over 100 Islamic State operatives and the days of clashes that followed left at least 180 people dead, including Islamic State fighters, Kurdish fighters and civilians.

The prison reportedly held some 3,500 ISIS jihadists, as well as some 850 children. Hundreds of ISIS prisoners escaped on the first day of the takeover; many were later recaptured. The Kurdish forces cut off food and water to the jail for the last two days to pressure the remaining Islamic State fighters to surrender, according to the UK-based watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
