Kuwait suspended flights to Iraq in the wake of a rocket attack aimed at Baghdad International Airport. The flights were suspended for a week beginning on Sunday due to “current conditions,” according to Kuwait Airways, citing instructions from the Kuwaiti Civil Aviation Authority. The announcement came on Saturday, a day after six rockets were fired at the airport. The rockets damaged a runway and two civilian planes; there were no casualties.
The United States has blamed such attacks on Iran-backed armed groups. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack, however, saying it was meant to “destabilize” Iraq. Iraqi authorities later announced that they had arrested someone in connection with the attack at a checkpoint near the northern province of Kirkuk in the Kurdish-run semi-autonomous region. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
