Kuwaiti Emir Names Foreign Minister as New PM
Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah announced Tuesday that the Gulf state’s foreign minister since 2011, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, would now serve as prime minister, according to the state news agency KUNA. The appointment comes after a dispute between members of the ruling family and parliament, over allegations of the mishandling of public funds. Defense Minister Nasser Al-Sabah claims he has evidence that $790 million was embezzled from the Defense Ministry when it was headed by Khaled Al-Sabah, the current interior minister. The emir first appointed Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah to head a new government, but the latter declined the position.
