Lebanese Government Resigns

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri has announced that he will submit his resignation, and that of his entire government, to President Michel Aoun. The announcement was made in a televised speech from the prime minister’s official residence in Beirut on Tuesday afternoon. The move comes amid massive protests that have rocked the country for 13 consecutive days, motivated by the perception of government corruption and poor service. “It has become necessary for us to make a great shock to fix the crisis. I am going to the Baabda Palace to give my resignation,” said Hariri. Earlier on Tuesday, supporters of the Shi’ite Hizbullah and Amal movements attacked an encampment of anti-government demonstrators in downtown Beirut. The movements are known to be concerned about losing crucial power – and funding – with the falling of a government.
