Libyan Officials: Truce Over, Tripoli Fighting Resumes

According to Libyan officials, fighting around Tripoli has resumed following a tentative cease-fire that was largely observed during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. The officials on Tuesday accused the Khalifa Haftar-led Libyan National Army of carrying out airstrikes on the southern outskirts of the capital. They added that fighters allied to the internationally recognized Government of National Accord had responded by shelling Haftar’s forces in the area. Haftar launched an offensive in April to seize Tripoli but encountered unexpected stiff resistance. According to the World Health Organization, the four-months-long offensive has killed nearly 1,100 people, wounded approximately 6,000 others, and displaced more than 120,000 civilians.
